September 1, 2008: Things I Think I Think

One of my favorite blogs that I read on a regular basis belongs to NFL writer, Peter King, who posts "Monday Morning Quarterback" each week on si.com.  I love to get his insider info, argue back at my computer screen at some of his opinions, and just enjoy his general non-sports musings under the heading, "10 Things I Think I Think."

With the format inspired by Peter, here are my
10 Things I Think I Think About The End of Summer '08:

1. It's confirmed.  I love heat.  This is a definite life-long love affair.  Even with the humidity of the South, heat, to me, always feels like a big hug. I'm always a little sad to see the days getting shorter and cooler.

2. There must be a "Zagat Dining Guide For Mosquitoes" and I must be the top dining recommendation.  I swear I have mosquitoes that fly in from Kentucky to Atlanta, just to get their nibble. "Have you tried the Daryn Kagan?" the review insists, "You haven't lived until you've tried it." Within minutes of stepping outside, I become a walking Skeeter Buffet Line.

3. Even though, it is so irritating to be reduced to a mosquito roast beef, I still don't like putting on bug spray.  It's sticky and seems to add one more layer to summer dirt.  Sometimes I give in.  Sometimes I don't.

4. Forget the current political climate, there is no greater arguement with diverging opinions than what humans and dogs each think make for a good smell.  I love the squeaky clean sniff of Darla Louise right after her bath with Spring apple-scented doggie shampoo.  She seems to think all is not right with her olafactory senses until she's swum in skanky creek water, rolled around in sand, and if there is a dead critter near-by embed near her collar, all the better.

5. I am blessed to have share a 16th summer with Tripod The 3-Legged Wonder Cat.

6. Politics aside, I have loved the storylines of this Presidential campaign.  And I have not wished for one moment that I was out there covering it for CNN.

7. I love that my former "TV husband," Bill Hemmer is out there covering the campaign.  Billy leaves and breathes politics and its great to see Fox News giving him the kind of opportunity he deserves. (Plus it's fun to email him while he's on the air from the conventions.)

8. A totally burned hot dog fresh from the BBQ, slathered in gobs of French's Mustard is just about worth the cancer risk that comes with eating it.  Yummy.

9. I am thankful that Summer '08 treated me to visits with every member of my family.

10. As with every summer, I'm sad to see this one go, but I'm looking forward to September bringing:

-the start of the NFL season.

-this week's trip to San Francisco.

and

-one of my most important trips ever: honoring my Dad's final wish to scatter his ashes in Hawaii.  I'll be sharing that journey with you here in this space, so be sure to check back often.
