There must be something happening with lavender! A lot of it sure is showing up in my life.
First, there is today's featured story. A neat woman, Vicky Rathje, shares how she went from over-stressed, type A saleswoman to becoming a lavender farmer! All it took was a knock over the head--literally.
Vicky and her husband were shopping for carpet for their new house when a bolt of carpet fell from above. Vicky suffered a brain injury. Recovering from that made her do something totally foreign to her--slow down, be patient with herself, and heal.
It was through that journey that she discovered the healing powers of lavender. Loved it so much that she transformed her life, land, and career to become a lavender farmer and is much happier for it.
Writer Jeannie Ralston didn't need a knock over the head to change her life. No, instead she had a husband who took her out of the go-go life of a New York City magazine writer to the slow, rural life of Texas hill country. I don't know that Jeanne would say she went kicking and screaming, but it does sound like it wasn't her first choice.
Her husband had the dream of becoming a lavender farmer, only problem was, his job as a photographer took him all around the world. That left Jeanne back in Texas forced to figure out how grow lavender.
She shares her journey of making that transition in her new book, The Unlikely Lavender Queen: A Memoir of Unexpected Blossoming. Good Morning America has it as one of their "Great Summer Read" selections.
I heard from Jeannie about her book just as I was working on putting together Vicky's story. Coincindence? Uh, no. I stopped believing in those a long time ago.
I love this line about Jeannie's book:
Learning to want what you already have is the greatest lesson in life and this wonderful story shows you how to let it happen.
Who couldn't use a bouquet of that kind of thinking?
Thanks to both ladies for the lovely lavender they've sent my way.
